Semicon Europa is the most important trade event for the European semiconductor industry. This year, it is being held jointly with Productronica, and organizers expect more than 70,000 visitors connected to advanced electronics, automation, and manufacturing. Among the attendees and exhibitors are global leaders such as Intel, GlobalFoundries, Infineon, and ESMC, representing every part of the value chain, from chip design and software development to final semiconductor manufacturing.
Semiconductors are one of the key sectors at the center of Poland’s investment promotion efforts. Pomerania is the most important location in the country for the development of this industry, as the only recent foreign direct investment (FDI) projects in semiconductors are located in northern Poland. Over the past year, several companies chose to invest in the Tricity area, including SK hynix – the global memory leader, which opened an R&D center in Gdańsk; MEP OSM Solutions – a producer of prefabricated construction modules and OSM (Off-Site Manufacturing) infrastructure systems for semiconductor fabs and data centers; and Openchip – a fabless semiconductor design and integration company. The company has only just invested in Pomerania, yet is already accelerating its growth. During an Invest in Pomerania–hosted industry cocktail, Marcin Milewski – Poland Site Leaed, announced the expansion of its collaboration with Japan’s NEC to co-develop new RISC-V–based vector processing unit (VPU) cards for the NEC Aurora HPC system.
Pomerania: Poland’s Leading Semiconductor Destination
Investors are joining a well-developed and diversified semiconductor ecosystem in Pomerania. It includes both chip design and software development (such as Europe’s largest Intel R&D center, as well as Synopsys, Solidigm, SII, GlobalLogic, Alten, and Ferchau) and advanced electronics manufacturing – including Jabil, Thales, Flex, and Lacroix Electronics.
The region’s current position is the outcome of a long-term investment attraction strategy consistently implemented over the years, based in part on an analysis prepared for the Pomeranian Voivodeship by the World Bank. Semiconductors were identified as one of the key future sectors for Invest in Pomerania.
Invest in Pomerania joined SEMI three years ago and has since been very active in promoting not only Pomerania but the entire Poland within the global semiconductor community. The results are clear: in March, we organized the Industry Strategy Symposium in the Tricity area, one of the industry’s leading events, and next year we will return to Sopot. At this year’s Semicon Europa, Invest in Pomerania is coordinating the promotion of the entire country – for the first time in history, a Polish Pavilion has been created. It is an excellent example of how a regional initiative can operate on an international level and achieve real impact – says Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe.
At the Invest in Pomerania booth, organized in partnership with the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone and the Polish Investment and Trade Agency, a full ecosystem of companies operating in semiconductor-related fields is being showcased.
Among the companies that joined us at the fair are: Vigo Photonics, Grifin Electronics, SemiQa, Fluence, Nanores, C-MAC, Chip Craft, SII, MEP, and Jabil. It is a very broad cross-section of the supply chain – from IC design and software to laser technologies, infrared detectors, monocrystalline materials, construction modules, and electronics manufacturing. We are also accompanied by professors from Gdańsk University of Technology and the University of Gdańsk. Together, we have built a comprehensive academic offering for the industry – for both companies and research institutes. This includes student internships, faculty exchanges, guest lectures, and, most importantly, R&D projects. It is real cooperation supporting the growth of the Pomeranian ecosystem – says Dawid Kwiatkowski, who coordinates Invest in Pomerania’s activities at Semicon Europa.
Debut of the First-Ever Polish Pavilion
Invest in Pomerania also prepared the Polish Pavilion, making it available to companies from across the country and institutions involved in economic promotion. Exhibitors include Alten, Ensemble, Resquant, Atlas Ward, Clip, as well as Special Economic Zones: Łódź, Legnica, Katowice, the City of Łódź, and the Silesian Voivodeship.
In addition to organizing the trade fair booth, Invest in Pomerania was the main partner of the Executive Forum, during which – together with partners from Dresden – experts analyzed the possibility of replicating Saxony’s success in front-end semiconductor manufacturing in Pomerania. The most important aspect discussed was energy supply. In northern Poland, two key energy programs are being implemented simultaneously: the development of offshore wind energy, including the Baltic Power project, and the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant in Lubiatowo–Kopalino.
These investments position Pomerania as a prime location for strategic industrial projects requiring high energy capacity. Confirmation of these plans is the recently signed letter of intent with Taiwanese partners concerning the development of an industrial park of more than 550 hectares within the Tricity metropolitan area.
